DESCRIPTION

Many Kiwis have strong ethical values, but not every company shares them.

Worker exploitation, child labour, unfair wages and unsafe working conditions are not practices many brands own up to.

And, while many of us enjoy the convenience of online shopping, it can be difficult to tell what’s happening behind the scenes.

If you’re trying to avoid companies that operate unfairly what do you do? Download FIND FAIR.

It’s a simple, easy to use extension that highlights ethical choices as you search and shop online.

Now you can help reduce poverty, inequality and exploitation with every ethical purchase.

Developed by fair&good, a not-for-profit organization with the assistance of Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand, Trade Aid, Just Kai, Tearfund, B Corp and the SPCA, FIND FAIR is completely impartial.

Brands cannot pay to be included, they must be endorsed by fair&good or one of their partner not-for-profit organisations.

When you use FIND FAIR you can be certain that every “FAIR” product has been assessed according to a strict set of values.

Now there’s no need to wonder if a company behaves ethically, with FIND FAIR you’ll know.

How it works With FIND FAIR you no longer have to search out ethical brands, it will do the spotting for you.

In Search When you look for a product or brand, ethical products display the FAIR symbol and are highlighted in orange capitals.

Online Shopping In online supermarkets, FIND FAIR will display the FAIR symbol and highlight ethical options in orange capitals while you browse, so you can instantly see which products have been endorsed.

nz Our criteria FIND FAIR has a focus on social justice through ethical trade where people in supply chains are fairly rewarded for their work.

FIND FAIR endorses brands who have received a certification from at least one of the following organisations: Fairtrade, GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), BCI (Better Cotton Initiative), Rainforest Alliance, B Corp, and SPCA.

Or an A+ or A rating from Tear Fund’s Ethical Fashion Guide.

Fair&good’s values are also used to evaluate a brand’s eligibility including those companies not large enough to qualify for Fairtrade certification.

Our values - Fair labour - involving no child, forced or trafficked labour.

Workers are provided safe working conditions, have their rights upheld and are paid a living wage or above.

Stable prices are paid for crops and artisan products.

- Transparency in supply chains from origin, through manufacturing, including sub-contractors.

Certified and audited where possible with best practice code of conduct agreements with suppliers of ingredients and components.

- Gender equality where a particular focus is made to empower women.

- Community minded – The community is involved in decision making and leadership.

Livelihoods are protected and artisan skills are enhanced and nurtured.

- Inclusiveness - where vulnerable groups are provided opportunities to succeed.

This includes those previously exploited or trafficked, refugees or forced migrants, the disabled, vulnerable or exploited children and the homeless.

- Caring for the environment.

This may include organic products, use of natural fibres, vegan products, minimizing chemical use, reducing pollution and plastic use, and efforts to mitigate climate change including anti-deforestation.

- Giving back.

Profits being re-invested back into the community.

This includes social enterprise, capacity building and raising funds for social justice-focused causes and charities.

- Consistency.

Where shared company values are consistently applied in every area of the business from source to manufacture, transport, product, packaging, fair labour, social empowerment and environmental protection.

- Animal welfare - according to the SPCA’s criteria of avoiding negative states such as pain, distress and hunger, and also the mental state of animals and the goal of giving them a good life.

While every effort has been made to measure each brand’s adherence to these criteria, we accept the path to compliance is a long one.

Companies who make continuous improvements in significant areas may have products included in FIND FAIR on that basis.

FIND FAIR endeavours to offer consumers a breadth of ethical purchase options.

Sugar, nuts, chocolate and coconut are just some of the ingredients where risky supply chains are common.

While many Fairtrade suppliers are based in the developing world, some brands have avoided risky ingredients by sourcing them from first world countries.

FIND FAIR has also included these brands on a “do no harm” basis.

We are always looking to improve and adapt.

New products arrive on the market and brands often can change suppliers of base components.

If you believe a company included in FIND FAIR is behaving unethically or if you have learned of a fairtrade product not currently included in our database, please inform our quality control team at findfair@fairandgood.
