This cantle plate was part of a large garniture made in Augsburg in 1563 for Wolfgang von Zweibrücken-Veldenz (1526\u20131569), Count Palatine of the Rhine. The remainder of the garniture, readily identifiable owing to its distinctive decoration, is today divided among museums in Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Brussels.
