The uraeus serpent marks the royal status of this person, who is wearing an unusual wig, with striations running from the forehead to the back. (A similar hairstyle is found in the nearby relief.) The shape of the mouth and the several high curls of the uraeus sugges a date early in Dynasty 12, but the naturally sculpted eyebrow and ear point to the middle of the dynasty. The depth and angle of the break show that the head was once part of a sphinx\u2014a common statue type not only for kings but also for royal women, as in this case here.
