Onnagata were male actors who played the female roles in Kabuki theater. Their costumes often rivaled the robes of the licensed courtesans. The actor Nakamura Noshio II is depicted here in the role of an oiran, the highest class of courtesan, but he is dressed in robes that again bring Ono no Komachi to mind. The women of the Yoshiwara district were often likened to Komachi, and were sometimes called "cherries of the night that blossom luxuriously," a reference to the famous trees planted along the main street of the district.Shun'ei worked in the ironic manner of Sharaku, his master. Here, in an attempt to deflate the glamorous image of the onnagata, he does not try to disguise the heavy square jaw, the untidy strands of loose hair at the back of the neck, the whimsical sleeves, or the inelegant bare foot, turned inward.Free picture Portrait of the Actor Nakamura Yasio as an Oiran Standing, Facing to the Left integrated with the OffiDocs web apps
