During the Ming dynasty, the ceremonial robes of government officials bore insignia designating rank. The animal on this badge is a lion, corresponding to the highest military rank. The unusual embroidery technique employed here (visible in the clouds at the top) consists of layering gilded paper under a widely spaced silk stitch that allows the gold to shine through.
