This robe's embroidered design is dominated by three variations on the pattern of interlocking circles, called shipp\u014d-tsunagi. Although the name literally means "seven linked jewels," it evolved from the homonyms shipp\u014d (four directions) and jipp\u014d (ten directions), which referred to the infinite expansion possible with this pattern. Widely used in eastern Asia, the pattern is found in textiles preserved since the eighth century in the Sh\u014ds\u014din repository, and by the ninth century it was used for court robes and decorative patterns in Buddhist sculpture. The bottom band of the robe features a design of waves.
