During the seventeenth century, rows of flowering plants became fashionable designs for textiles in Iran, India, and Turkey. In this example, the plants are fantastic conglomerations of blossoms growing out of pools of coiled waves. The serrated edges of the leaves may show the influence of the so-called saz style popular in Turkey at the same time. Safavid weavers of this period were particularly adept at obscuring the junctions where pattern-repeat units meet, creating the sense of a continuous composition.
