George Inness probably would not have considered this painting suitable for exhibition because it is not finished. It offers insight, however, into the way he worked. The trees in the middle distance still remain in a preparatory state, sketchiy rendered in the same type of charcoal drawing that guided the development of the rest of this composition. The looser, more freely brushed style of this work is very different from Inness's early, Hudson River school manner and signals the direction of his mature work under the inspiration of French Barbizon art.
