Eco-Tec is a
series of conferences that focused on the symbiosis between ecology and
technology. It took place as four forums and series of events from 1992 to 1995.
The First Forum happened in Corsica, France in 1992, with participants
including architects, artists, theorists, and sociologists. It explored between
ecology and technology and called for a more symbiotic relationship between the
two. The Seconnd Forum took place at Dia Art Center, New York in
1993, under the title “The Ecology of the Artificial”. This forum explored the
artificial under the urban environment. It considered the city both as a living
organism and as an ecology, calling for a sustainable development of a new
urban landscape. The Third Forum went back again to Corsica, France
in 1993, and developed a program for an international school for environmental
art and architecture, envisioning an alternative institute that can bridge
between education and practice. The Forth Forum (1995) consisted of the October
forum in Corsica and the December one in San Francisco. The Corsica forum Consisted
of a public forum and a series of workshops. The main focus of the program was
to explore and generate ideas for economic survival through technological
developments for the community in the Corsican hinterland. The San Francisco
forum looked at the closing of military bases in the Bay Area and
brought about a discussion on the ecology and the effect of military
technologies in relation to city, culture and architecture. The aim of the
project was said to against the absorption into the banality of contemporary
cities.

These events culminated in Storefront’s
publication Eco-Tec: Architecture of the In-Between. It brings together
people from art, architecture, philosophy, and biology, with contributors including
Mel Chin, Neil Denari, Manuel Delanda, Felix Guattari, Mark Wigley, James
Wines, etc. As an extension from the four forums, the publication further
explored topics such as ecosophy, stochastic chaos, artificiality, nanotechnology,
industrial factories, mining and regeneration.
