The story I heard is that the hills were dotted with summer cabins. In the early 1920's people would take the train to Southfields and a wagon would go the 4 miles to the cove. At night the music from the hotel could even be heard in the cabins over the ridge.
The colorized image with two row boats of people was taken from a rocky spot on the southern shore of Mombasha. The house directly above the single rower was demolished in 1975. The date 1869 was written in small rock on that building mantle piece.
The water wheels foundation still exists.
