On the night of April 2, 1926, acting on orders of the Goldsboro Board of Aldermen, City Manager Claude M. Grantham carried out what months of negotiations had failed to accomplish - the removal of the Southern Railway racks from Center Street.

From midnight until morning, a force of 100 men worked northward from Spruce Street to Ash, uncoupling rails & digging up crossties. As they removed, they were transported on handcars to the Southern yards north of Ash, where they were neatly stacked in rows.

By morning the clandestine job was done.
