Flickr/DeviantArt description: Like many Ontarians, I was shocked to see yesterday's new lockdown measures in Ontario. The closure of outdoor amenities (despite the advice of medical experts) and the authorization of police carding (despite the track record of racialization and discrimination) have been a shock to those who had hunkered down during the winter and expected to be able to enjoy outdoor activities again in the spring.

The backlash to the government's new restrictions has been immense, with medical experts criticizing both the closure of outdoor recreation and the police profiling as being ineffective and inappropriate, arguing that their recommendations for paid sick leave and earlier lockdowns were ignored. For many of us, it is easy to feel as if our government isn't doing enough to protect us, or even doing the right things to keep us safe.

Back in 2016, after a year of political turmoil from virtually every corner of the globe, I wrote to myself that politics wasn't the solution—that any solution implemented by one government would simply be undone by the next; that any issue forecast on the horizon would be ignored until it was too late; that history would never be learned from and mistakes would continue to be repeated. I still stand by that statement. I'm not necessarily saying that you should go out and actively defy the government, nor am I saying that politics is not important. We should still maintain discourse with our political leaders and participate in elections. But we shouldn't put all our eggs into the basket of our political leaders. Let's not forget that people, not politics, are the fuel behind change. History is shaped by people's collective actions. Regardless of whether we elect a leader that we like or dislike, we must continue to make the difference ourselves. Don't wait on politics to deliver. As a history student, I can tell you that it never has.

Oh, and please listen to the scientists. They've spent a year researching this virus and have gathered a lot of information already. There is no reason to base decisions on fear or appearances when we have the facts to make rational decisions on.

Instagram comment: To clarify, I am not against the lockdown—in fact, I'm disappointed to see that our government even *considered* lifting the last lockdown, given the projections in February—but I am unhappy with how the current government has handled the pandemic and has ignored the advice of medical experts. If you're out protesting the lockdown, gathering in massive groups and not wearing a mask, I am disappointed with you too. If you're a frontline worker frustrated with the lack of protections, a medical worker anxious over dark times ahead, or a parent dealing with kids ready to tear the house to shreds (I know you're reading this), you have my deepest condolences and my prayers. And my encouragement, too, since it's people like you who make history happen.
