Flickr/DeviantArt/Instagram description: Some days I'm just exhausted by everything. Work and school leave you an empty husk by the end of the day. The demands of everyone in your life pile on and scream at you in one collective voice. Your free time slowly erodes as work chips away at it with every compromise you make. "Just this once" becomes the new norm. You find yourself with less and less time every day to do all the things you need to do. You lose sleep, eat poorly, and become completely disconnected to everything and everyone around you. Years pass like minutes. Relationships become a dreadful burden. Family turns into a prolonged torture session. Routine chains you to itself and beats you with a stick. Life feels like it's being tipped down the drain when you come to your senses and wonder, "How did I get here?"

I've always been fascinated by the relationship twins have. Having grown up together on a level more egalitarian than that of regular siblings; far closer than that of parents and spouses; and far more intimate than that of friends and schoolmates\u2014it's little wonder that they often turn to each other when faced with their most personal, emotional burdens that would be nearly impossible for a singleton to talk about.

When I feel intimately burdened on a level too deep to be discussed even with close friends, I often wish I had a twin that I could share those burdens with. Someone that understands you the way you understand yourself. Just being able to share the pain with someone else is often all that's needed. Twins tend to live longer than the general population, and for a good reason: it shows we need people who are willing to be with the good, the bad, and the ugly times of our lives.

Twins have the stubs of this relationship from birth; the act of growing up together develops and matures it. For the rest of us singletons, it's still possible to build a close, intimate relationship, but it takes time and investment. It can't happen overnight. It doesn't happen naturally. It can't be forced. And it isn't even guaranteed.
