On December 4th, 2020, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems released an updated version of the first installment in the Fire Emblem series for the Nintendo Switch. That installment was Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, released only in Japan in 1990 for the Nintendo Family Computer (Famicom). Having been released in multiple languages, this remastered version is the closest players have gotten to officially playing the original Famicom game in a language that is not Japanese.Unlike its remakes in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem for the Super Famicom, and Shadow Dragon for the Nintendo DS, this version seeks to emulate the original title as closely as possible, while also including new features to enhance the game's accessibility. This includes a turn-rewind function, suspend points, the ability to speed up gameplay, and more.
Upon its announcement on October 22nd, 2020, it was revealed that, despite the game being only available for digital download, a limited, physical, special edition would also be available for purchase. This version, aptly named the 30th Anniversary Edition, included many items, many of which harken back to the era of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), the localized version of the Famicom.
These items included:
- A box with unique detailing, containing the items.
- A map of the game's setting, the continent of Archanea
- An instruction booklet booklet
- A card containing a digital download code for the game, as well as art and instructions on how to use the code.
- A transparent art piece, shaped like a NES Game Pak.
- A classically designed protective sleeve for the replica Game Pak art piece
- A box, designed in the style of classic NES Game Pak boxes, which contains the 5 aforementioned items.
- A uniquely designed casing to contain the previously mentioned box.
- "Legacy of Archanea", a deluxe art book containing a chronology of the events of the Fire Emblem titles that take place on the continent of Archanea, as well as official artwork of various official games and merchandise that featured characters from those same titles.
- A poster imitating a hypothetical issue of Nintendo Power, a discontinued magazine originally published directly by Nintendo of America. This poster contained classically-styled artwork, as well as tips and secrets that could be discovered in the game, much like the magazine that it imitates.
As of the time of this page's posting, the game is set to no longer be available for download in March 2021.
