Hundreds of people were in danger on Monday (9/5) in the Egyptian capital Cairo, when a large fire broke out in an industrial area, injuring at least 81 people, including several firefighters.
The fire broke out at night in a hotel in the Al Moski area, quite close to the Al Azar mosque. It quickly expanded to four neighboring building blocks, despite the immediate intervention of the fire brigade, as officially informed by the police.
The burned buildings, including warehouses, contained highly flammable materials, such as plastics, the smoke of which caused a suffocating atmosphere in a large radius in the city, while nearby areas were evacuated for security reasons.
Firefighters put the blaze under control Monday afternoon, and at least 16 firefighters and police were taken to hospital with respiratory problems or burns.
