The driveway to Lucky Mud is just beyond that last curve. You need to drive fairly slowly to make the turn. Wilson Creek is just to the right. I believe this was taken perhaps in 1977, and I believe the road had already been “improved” at least once.

The metal barn was built by Clyde and Eva Stark in the mid 1970s. They generously allowed me to store alfalfa hay in that barn for our cow, and when Vicki and I were together, her horses (for one year).

I hope I learned something living there. I'm confident Clyde and Eva and many of our neighbors, and we as a group, had serious differences on a variety of issues. We really were just a bunch of hippie city kids that had joined the back to the land movement. None of us had any real idea of what it meant to live in a seriously rural place. And holy crap does gossip ever abound where nearly everybody grew up locally. Honestly, after we'd been there a while and had gotten to know some of the locals, we heard some of the more "interesting" rumors. I, for example, did not know that every stinkin' one of us had a PhD! (I had not returned to school, so my only degree was an HSDO. HA!)

That didn't matter when dealing with us on a face to face basis. Hell, I shot Clyde and Eva’s dog (for suckin' eggs). I had warned them and they understood. I experienced this kind of thing with others in the community too. One of our neighbors, definitely politically on the right, let me work on one of my vehicles in his shop (Vick owned, maintained and drove his own log truck). I had broken down in front of his place. I knew his name, but we had never met. Nonetheless, he came out when he saw the hood of my vehicle up and offered the use of his shop. I never would have asked. I seriously hope I learned something about treating others from some of the folks I lived near. Not all, but by far the majority. And if you don't know, I make no secret about my feelings about religion. Fucking amazing people.

I loved driving home, the entire 7 miles up the valley.
