Happy New-Year, America! This .gif cycles (1 full revolution every 2 minutes & 43 seconds) chronologically through first-issue-of the-new-year cover pages (1 representative image per-year) that I've selected from newspapers published in America between 1776 and 2020 . Note: in some periods, Sunday publication was frowned upon culturally as a violation of Sabbatarian principles. In such times and regions, when New-Year's Day fell on a Sunday, the first-of-the-new-year issue might not be published (as some dates in the images above reflect) until, e.g., 2 January. Feel free to contact me with any questions about the (I will say, whimsical) methodology of newspaper and page selection used here. While the above is not rigorously designed (nor intended) to sustain formal scholarship, it is hoped that it is serviceable as a curiosity that might inspire well-framed questions and research about the history of U.S. culture writ large, and of American print and media culture particularly. More largely, I hope that you enjoy seeing these old American newspapers on parade.

Professor of American History
