Southwold was once a very busy fishing port, herring being the main catch, and until the 1914-18 war large numbers of people could be seen gutting the fish during the season. That is long gone and today the harbour, which extends nearly a mile upstream from the mouth of the River Blyth, is mainly used by fishing boats, yachts and small pleasure boats.
