"The Crossroads Of My Life"
by: Wes Robert Ward
On a warm summer's day as I was calmly walking along a woodsy path I came upon a crossroads in my life.
And for the life of myself I couldn't decide which road to take. For you must completely understand that it was a big decision and one not to take so lightly.
Now in the middle of this so called fork in the road was a wooden sign that said:
Go Left And It Will Be A Long Journey.
Go Right And It Will Be A Short Story.
Such a conundrum, such a dilemma and one that was difficult to decide. Who in the world doesn't like a long journey? Yet no one likes a short story. I mean how long was the left path? And how short was the right path?
If I go left it could be years before I see home again. If I go right it could be just hours from home. You know the old saying home is where the heart is. The real question should be is your heart at home?
A Wiseman once said, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Begin with one foot then the other. Soon enough you will know how and not why or what or when it all descends, but where it ends."
And yet the other Wiseman would say, "A short story whether it is one sentence or a paragraph or less or more does not mean it will be short, yet someday be a tale told in biblical proportions."
Well at that point I suddenly realized without too much thought or comprehension that I could not make up my bewildered mind. If I go left it will be long. If I go right it will be short. If I go left it will be a journey. If I go right it will be a story.
And so sadly I decided on a third option. I briskly turned around, ignored the crossroads, and retreated from the torment of a confusing, perplexing contradiction that could have plagued me to no chaotic end.
So in a short story…. it was too long a decision to make in my life. A road less traveled is a road worn with age. And a journey in so many words is wisdom without wondering where one goes.
So I went home.
The End. 🌄
