The Origin of Fire and other vocal and orchestral works by Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra conducted by Thor Johnson (1913-1975). The Helsinki University Chorus conducted by Martti Turenen (1902-1979) with solo baritone Sulo Saarits (1911-1990). This recording is noteworthy for a couple of reasons; it was the premier recording of The Origin of Fire and it was the first recording issued in a stereo format. Remington Records (1950-1953) recorded the Helsinki University Chorus in Cincinnati as part of their US tour in 1953. They recorded in stereo. The recording was issued by Remington as a mono LP, but they also issued a stereo reel-to-reel tape. Remington folded in 1953 and Varese Sarabande bought the company and issued this stereo LP of the concert in 1978. Transfer from the original Varese Sarabande stereo LP VC 81041 by Bob Varney. English titles are provided, but the works are sung in Finnish.
