As one of the largest metropolitan areas in North Africa, with a population exceeding 3 million inhabitants within its urban core and millions more in its sprawling suburbs (Wilaya of Algiers), the city faces significant pressure on its environment. The increasing demand for housing, infrastructure expansion, and industrialization has led to habitat fragmentation, pollution of coastal waters, and a decline in native plant species. In this context, the role of the biologist becomes indispensable. A biologist is not merely an observer but an active agent in designing solutions that balance ecological integrity with human needs. Historically, Algeria has been rich in biological diversity due to its varied topography ranging from the Tell Atlas mountains to the Mediterranean coastline and the northern Sahara. However, unchecked urban sprawl in Algiers threatens this heritage. The modern biologist working within Algerian academic institutions, government agencies such as the Ministry of Environment and Renewable Energies, or non-governmental organizations plays a pivotal role in documenting biodiversity loss and implementing restoration projects. This article aims to elucidate how biologists can bridge the gap between scientific research and public policy in Algiers, ensuring sustainable development for both people and nature. From protecting coastal marine habitats to reviving peri-urban agriculture through bio-intensive methods, biologists are at the forefront of environmental innovation in Algeria. Moving forward, it is imperative that academic institutions collaborate more closely with governmental bodies and private stakeholders to scale up these initiatives. By empowering biologists as key actors in urban planning and agricultural policy-making, Algiers can serve as a model for other rapidly growing cities in North Africa.
