The findings suggest that the strategic employment of skilled carpenters not only preserves cultural heritage but also contributes to sustainable architectural practices by utilizing locally sourced materials and energy-efficient design principles.
Urban centers in North Africa are undergoing significant transformation, balancing the demands of modernization with the preservation of cultural identity. Morocco Casablanca, as the economic capital, stands at a unique crossroads where Art Deco influences coexist with traditional Moroccan architectural elements. However, this urban fabric is increasingly threatened by standardized construction methods that often overlook local craftsmanship and climatic responsiveness.
Central to the discussion of architectural authenticity and sustainability is the role of the artisan. While much attention is given to architects and engineers, it is often the Carpenter who translates conceptual designs into physical reality, especially when dealing with complex wooden structures. The knowledge passed down through generations in Morocco encompasses intricate joinery techniques that ensure durability without nails or glue, a practice highly relevant to modern sustainable building.
This article aims to examine how the traditional skills of the Carpenter can be adapted and integrated into contemporary architectural projects in Morocco Casablanca. By analyzing specific case studies and engaging with local artisans, this paper proposes that a collaborative approach between modern architects and traditional craftsmen yields buildings that are both culturally resonant and environmentally sustainable.
This research employs a qualitative case study approach, focusing on three distinct architectural projects located within Morocco Casablanca. These projects were selected based on their demonstrated use of traditional wooden elements crafted by local artisans. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with five master carpenters and two contemporary architects who have collaborated extensively in the region.
The analysis focuses on three key areas: the preservation of technical knowledge, the aesthetic integration of wood in modern design, and the socio-economic impact of employing traditional craftsmen. The study specifically highlights how these elements contribute to a unique architectural identity distinct from globalized concrete structures.
The traditional Carpenter in Morocco is not merely a builder but a custodian of cultural memory. Techniques such as zellige-like woodwork and intricate geometric carvings are deeply embedded in the architectural history of cities like Morocco Casablanca. However, these skills are often at risk of being lost due to the industrialization of construction.
Our interviews revealed that master carpenters possess an intimate understanding of local wood properties—such as cedar and olive wood—that modern engineers often overlook. This knowledge is crucial for projects in Morocco Casablanca, where the climate requires materials that can withstand humidity while providing natural insulation. By involving carpenters early in the design phase, architects can leverage this expertise to create structures that are inherently more sustainable.
To illustrate these points, we examine three projects in Morocco Casablanca that successfully integrated traditional carpentry.
The first project is a cultural center located in the historic Derb Sultan neighborhood. The architects collaborated with local master carpenters to design a facade featuring modern interpretations of traditional mashrabiya screens. These screens, crafted by the Carpenter, provide shade and ventilation, reducing the building's reliance on mechanical cooling systems.
The second project is a boutique hotel in the city center. The interior design features exposed wooden beams and ceiling details that mimic historical mosques but utilize modern engineering standards for safety. The use of reclaimed wood by skilled carpenters not only added aesthetic value but also reduced the carbon footprint associated with transporting new materials.
The third project involves residential housing units designed to appeal to a market seeking sustainable living.
