Abstract:

As Ankara transitions from a planned bureaucratic capital into a complex metropolis characterized by high-density construction and gentrification, the indigenous craft of woodworking faces significant challenges regarding preservation, economic viability, and cultural relevance. By analyzing field interviews with master craftsmen in historic neighborhoods such as Kızılay and Çankaya, this study explores how carpenters are negotiating the tension between industrial prefabrication techniques and heritage restoration demands. The survival and thriving of this profession depend on three factors: effective policy support for cultural heritage conservation in Ankara, renewed emphasis on vocational training that combines traditional techniques with modern safety standards, and public appreciation for the intrinsic value of handmade wooden structures.

Future research should examine the impact of digital fabrication technologies, such as CNC routing, on traditional carpentry practices in Turkey. As these tools become more accessible to local artisans in Ankara, they may offer new avenues for efficiency and innovation without sacrificing the artistic integrity that defines Turkish woodworking heritage. Ultimately, recognizing and supporting the carpenter is not just an economic issue but a cultural imperative for maintaining the soul of Turkey’s capital city.
