Abstract

Rapid urbanization in Sub-Saharan Africa presents unprecedented challenges for environmental engineers tasked with maintaining public health and ecological integrity. This study examines the critical role of the Environmental Engineer in Accra, Ghana, focusing on two pivotal infrastructure domains: solid waste management and potable water sanitation. As Accra expands beyond its planned boundaries, informal settlements increasingly lack access to basic municipal services, leading to severe environmental degradation. Through a mixed-methods approach involving field data collection from major landfill sites and analysis of community health records regarding waterborne diseases, this paper evaluates current engineering interventions. The findings indicate that while significant progress has been made in formalizing waste collection routes in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), informal recycling sectors remain largely unregulated. Furthermore, the integration of nature-based solutions for stormwater management is proposed as a viable strategy to mitigate flooding and pollution in coastal communities. This article argues that the modern Environmental Engineer in Accra must transcend traditional technical roles to become agents of policy reform, community engagement, and sustainable urban planning.
