Abstract

Baghdad, the capital city of Iraq, faces profound environmental challenges stemming from decades of conflict, rapid urbanization, and inadequate infrastructure maintenance. This article examines the critical role of Environmental Engineering in addressing water scarcity, sewage system failures, and solid waste management issues in Baghdad. By analyzing recent data on water quality parameters and municipal waste generation rates, this study evaluates the efficacy of current engineering interventions. The paper argues that sustainable environmental engineering solutions must be localized to address specific climatic and socio-political contexts. Recommendations include the modernization of wastewater treatment plants, implementation of decentralized recycling systems, and policy integration for long-term urban resilience.

The intersection of environmental degradation and urban development poses one of the most significant challenges for modern metropolises.
