Abstract

This study explores the multifaceted role of the hairdresser within the socio-economic fabric of Córdoba, Argentina. While often categorized merely as a service industry job, the profession serves as a critical node in local social interaction, cultural expression, and economic resilience. Through qualitative interviews with 50 practitioners across various neighborhoods in Córdoba Capital and surrounding departments such as General San Martín and Punilla Valley, this article examines how hairdressers function not only as aesthetic professionals but also as community anchors. The research highlights the unique informal economy dynamics of Argentina, the impact of inflation on service pricing, and the preservation of traditional barbering techniques alongside modern styling trends. The findings suggest that supporting local hairdressers is vital for maintaining social cohesion in Argentine urban centers.

In the bustling metropolitan area of Córdoba, Argentina, the sound of scissors and the hum of hair dryers constitute a ubiquitous auditory landscape. The profession of hairdresser, or peluquero, holds a distinguished place in Argentine culture. However, academic literature often overlooks this sector in favor of industrial or agricultural analyses. This article aims to fill that gap by analyzing the specific context of Córdoba, the second-largest city in Argentina and a hub for technology and education.

Córdoba possesses a distinct identity compared to Buenos Aires. It is known for its colonial architecture, university presence, and strong provincial identity. Within this unique environment, the hairdresser acts as a mediator between tradition and modernity. The objective of this paper is to argue that the hairdresser in Córdoba is an essential agent of social stability and cultural continuity.

The history of hairdressing in Córdoba dates back to the early 20th century, influenced by European immigration waves, particularly from Italy and Spain. Traditional barbershops (barberías) were not merely places for haircuts but served as political hubs where men discussed football, politics, and local news. In neighborhoods like Alberdi or Güemes Park (Bosques), these establishments preserved a sense of community.

In recent decades, the rise of specialized salons has transformed the landscape. Yet, the traditional barber remains a symbol of Argentine masculinity and heritage. This duality—between the traditional barbershop and the contemporary beauty salon—reflects broader societal changes in Argentina, balancing conservative values with globalized aesthetic trends.

Argentina has faced significant economic challenges, including high inflation and currency devaluation. In this context, the hairdressing industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Unlike manufacturing sectors that struggle with import costs for raw materials, hairdressers primarily sell labor and expertise. This allows them to adjust prices more frequently in relation to the informal market rates.

3.1 The Informal Economy Factor

A significant portion of hairdressing services in Córdoba operates within or alongside the informal economy. Many practitioners, particularly those working from home or in small neighborhood shops, navigate complex tax regulations by adjusting payments to match real-time economic conditions. This adaptability ensures that employment remains accessible for many individuals who might otherwise be excluded from the formal labor market.

3.2 Supply Chain Challenges

Hairdressers in Córdoba face challenges related to the importation of professional products such as shampoos, dyes, and styling tools. Due to import tariffs and currency controls, prices for these goods fluctuate wildly. Successful hairdressers often develop strong relationships with local distributors or resort to parallel imports from neighboring countries like Uruguay or Brazil. This economic maneuvering highlights the entrepreneurial spirit inherent in the profession.

This shift illustrates the progressive cultural currents within Córdoba’s youth demographic.

The educational landscape for hairdressers in Córdoba is robust, featuring numerous vocational schools (institutos de formación profesional) that cater to the demand for skilled labor. These institutions play a pivotal role in standardizing skills while encouraging creativity. Furthermore, social media platforms have revolutionized marketing for hairdressers in the region.

Hairdressers in Córdoba actively utilize Instagram and TikTok to showcase their work, attract clients from across the province, and stay updated on global trends. This digital presence has democratized success, allowing talented individuals from peripheral areas of the city to build brands that rival those established in upscale commercial centers.

Despite its resilience, the sector faces ongoing challenges. Health and safety regulations require continuous investment in equipment and hygiene protocols, which can be burdensome for small businesses. Additionally, the lack of formalized labor rights for many independent hairdressers leaves them vulnerable to exploitation.

To address these issues, local government initiatives in Córdoba have begun to recognize the sector’s importance. Proposals include simplified tax regimes for small service providers and subsidized training programs focused on hygiene and business management. Such measures could significantly enhance the professional status of hairdressers.
