This study analyzes how Nigerian salon owners and stylists in Abuja navigate issues of professionalization, economic empowerment for women, and socio-cultural identity formation. Through qualitative interviews with forty practitioners across various districts in Abuja, this paper argues that the hairdresser is not merely an aesthetic service provider but a critical agent of social mobility and cultural preservation. The findings highlight challenges such as regulatory gaps and infrastructure deficits while proposing policy recommendations to formalize the industry within Nigeria’s broader economic framework.

Scholarly work on the beauty industry in West Africa has traditionally focused on Ghana and Senegal, with less attention paid to Nigeria’s capital city. Existing literature suggests that hairdressing in Africa is deeply intertwined with identity politics (Eckert, 1989). In Nigeria, recent studies indicate that the "glamour economy" plays a crucial role in urban social stratification (Omoniyi & Adeyemi, 2020). However, there remains a gap in understanding how these dynamics play out specifically in Abuja.
Previous research highlights that Nigeria’s informal sector employs approximately 65% of the workforce (National Bureau of Statistics, 2021). Within this sphere, hairdressing stands out due to its low barrier to entry and high demand. Despite its prevalence, the profession lacks comprehensive academic scrutiny regarding professional standards and ethical guidelines in urban centers like Abuja.
This study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Data was collected between January and June 2023 from forty hairdressers operating in major areas of Abuja, including Wuse Zone 5, Garki Area II, Maitama District, and Utako Market vicinity.
