Abstract

While industrial engineering principles are universally applicable, their implementation in Rio de Janeiro presents distinct challenges due to rapid urbanization, infrastructural constraints, and a complex regulatory environment. This paper explores how modern Industrial Engineers leverage data analytics, supply chain optimization, and sustainable manufacturing practices to enhance productivity in one of South America’s most dynamic regions. By examining case studies from the petrochemical sector in Macaé (Greater Rio) and the logistics hub of Jacarepaguá, we demonstrate how Brazilian professionals adapt global standards to local realities. The findings suggest that a hybrid approach, combining lean manufacturing methodologies with robust risk management strategies tailored to Brazil’s volatile market conditions, is essential for sustainable growth.

The discipline of industrial engineering has long been recognized as the backbone of modern manufacturing and service industries globally. Focusing on the optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations, it integrates mathematics, physics, and social sciences with engineering analysis and design to specify, predict, and evaluate results (ASME). However theoretical models may be in international textbooks; their practical application is deeply influenced by regional contexts.
