Abstract

As India positions itself as a global technological hub, Bangalore has emerged as its "Silicon Valley," fundamentally altering information consumption patterns. This paper argues that the traditional archivist model is obsolete in this environment. Instead, librarians in India’s digital capital must function as data curators, technology facilitators, and community educators. Through an analysis of academic institutions and public libraries in Bangalore, this study highlights the critical need for redefining librarian competencies to meet the demands of a dynamic, tech-savvy populace.
The role of the librarian has historically been perceived as one of custodianship—preserving books and managing physical collections. However, in the 21st century, particularly within developing economies like India, this paradigm is undergoing a radical shift. Bangalore, widely recognized as India’s premier technology center and the "Silicon Valley of India," presents a unique case study for understanding this evolution. The city hosts thousands of IT companies, startups, and research institutions that generate vast amounts of data daily.
In such an environment, the librarian in Bangalore is no longer merely a gatekeeper of knowledge but an active participant in the information lifecycle. The intersection of traditional Indian library science with modern digital infrastructure creates a complex landscape where librarians must navigate between heritage preservation and cutting-edge technology management.
