As a nation with diverse ports including Bandar Abbas, Chabahar, and Anzali City in Gilan Province near Tehran (the capital), Iran's maritime sector plays a pivotal role in its economy. However, despite these geographical advantages, there remains an underutilization of marine engineering capabilities due to technological gaps and international sanctions.
Marine Engineers, whose professional training includes naval architecture, propulsion systems design , environmental compliance ,and offshore structures are essential for optimizing this potential . Their work is not limited to ships but extends to energy platforms , offshore wind farms (emerging field), dredging operations and port logistics infrastructure.
In Tehran – the political heart of Iran where major decisions regarding transportation policies take place – many government agencies interact with academic institutions such as Amirkabir University of Technology or Sharif University that offer marine engineering programs. These universities produce highly skilled graduates who can address local industry needs through research and innovation.
This study employs a mixed-method approach combining qualitative interviews conducted with practicing marine engineers operating out of Tehran offices as well as quantitative analysis of port throughput data from Iranian ports authority reports over five years (from 2018–present). Additionally, comparative case studies were analyzed involving other countries like China and Japan which have successfully integrated similar fields into their national strategies.
The findings indicate that while Tehran-based marine engineers exhibit high levels of theoretical knowledge, practical application lags behind due to limited access to cutting-edge technologies caused by global supply chain disruptions resulting from sanctions imposed on Iran since 2019.
