Abstract

Central to this development is the trade of masonry, a fundamental discipline encompassing bricklaying, stone setting, and concrete block construction. This article critically examines the historical trajectory, current methodologies, and socio-economic implications of Masonry within the specific context of Nigeria’s capital city. As Abuja transitions from a planned administrative center to a sprawling metropolis with over five million inhabitants, the demand for skilled masonry labor has surged. However, this growth presents challenges regarding standardization, safety regulations, and material sustainability. By analyzing case studies from major districts such as Garki, Maitama, and Wuse II , this study highlights how traditional Masonry techniques are being integrated with modern engineering principles. The findings suggest that while the volume of masonry work has increased exponentially, there is a pressing need for formalized training programs and stricter enforcement of building codes to ensure structural integrity and aesthetic consistency. This paper argues that elevating the status of Masonry in Abuja is not merely an economic imperative but a critical component of sustainable urban planning in Nigeria.

The city of Abuja stands as a testament to modernist urban planning in Africa. Established as the federal capital in 1976 and officially inaugurated in 1982, it was designed to replace Lagos and serve as a neutral ground for Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups. Unlike other Nigerian cities that evolved organically over centuries, Abuja was laid out according to a master plan. However, the rapid urbanization of the last two decades has tested the resilience of this plan. By recognizing masonry as a specialized technical field rather than informal labor, stakeholders can improve construction quality, enhance worker safety, and promote sustainable urban development.
