Abstract

As one of the most densely populated urban centers in South Asia, Karachi’s built environment is predominantly characterized by brick and stone masonry. This study explores the historical context of Masonry practices dating back to pre-colonial eras through British colonial influences to contemporary vernacular construction methods. The research highlights how traditional Masonry techniques have been adapted to suit the harsh climatic conditions of Sindh while maintaining cultural identity. Furthermore, it analyzes the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and seismic vulnerabilities in Karachi, proposing sustainable interventions that integrate modern engineering with traditional Masonry craftsmanship. The findings suggest that a hybrid approach to construction is essential for ensuring both safety and heritage preservation in Pakistan’s largest metropolis.
