The findings suggest that while informal sector mechanics provide essential affordability and accessibility, formalization through certified training programs is imperative for ensuring road safety, environmental compliance, and economic sustainability.

The automotive industry serves as a backbone for urban mobility in developing economies. In Egypt, particularly in the historic coastal city of Alexandria, the reliance on private vehicular transport is immense due to gaps in public transportation infrastructure. Consequently, the demand for reliable mechanical services is high. However, the terminology "mechanic" here extends beyond mere repair; it encompasses a vast ecosystem of diagnostic expertise, parts sourcing, and labor-intensive maintenance that defines local mobility.

Alexandria Egypt stands at a crossroads. Historically known for its maritime trade and industrial roots, the city’s automotive sector is undergoing significant transformation. With rising fuel costs and an aging vehicle fleet mixed with newer imported models, the role of the mechanic has become increasingly complex. This article explores how mechanics in this region adapt to global technological shifts while operating within local economic constraints.

Alexandria is Egypt’s second-largest city and a primary gateway for imports, including vehicles. This geographical advantage has led to a diverse mix of car models on its streets, ranging from older European sedans (such as Fiat and Peugeot) to modern Asian hybrids. The diversity of the fleet presents a unique challenge for mechanics.

2.1 Demographic Distribution of Workshops

While traditional mechanical repair (brakes, suspension, engines) is well-understood by the local mechanic workforce in Alexandria, expertise in Electronic Control Units (ECUs), hybrid systems, and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) remains limited. Approximately 65% of surveyed workshops lacked proper diagnostic equipment for modern vehicles.

The mechanic profession in Alexandria is a vital source of employment for thousands of youths, particularly those with vocational rather than academic backgrounds. For many families in lower-income districts, the local mechanic is not just a service provider but a trusted community figure.

Future research should focus on longitudinal studies of how electric vehicle adoption will reshape the mechanic landscape in North Africa’s coastal cities. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for policymakers aiming to foster a resilient and skilled workforce capable of meeting global automotive standards.
