Abstract
This article examines the critical role of the informal "mechanic" sector within the rapidly urbanizing metropolis of Karachi, Pakistan. As public transportation infrastructure lags behind population growth, private automobile ownership has surged, creating a dependency on local repair ecosystems. This study argues that in Karachi, the mechanic is not merely a service provider but functions as an informal institution that bridges the gap between formal engineering standards and local economic realities. Through a sociotechnical lens, we analyze how mechanics in the Korangi and Gulshan-e-Iqbal industrial zones adapt to supply chain disruptions, regulatory ambiguities, and consumer trust deficits. The findings suggest that while these mechanics exhibit remarkable technical ingenuity (jugaad), they also contribute to systemic inefficiencies regarding safety and environmental standards. This paper calls for a policy framework that integrates rather than criminalizes this sector to enhance urban mobility in Pakistan.

The city of Karachi stands as the economic heartbeat of Pakistan and one of the most densely populated urban centers in the world. With a population exceeding sixteen million, the logistical demands on its infrastructure are immense. Within this complex ecosystem, few roles are as ubiquitous yet undervalued as that of the mechanic. In Western contexts, vehicle repair is often viewed through a lens of regulated corporate service or certified individual expertise. However in Pakistan's context specifically in Karachi—the mechanic operates within a vibrant informal economy that defies standard categorization.
This article seeks to define the mechanic not just as a trade practitioner but as a central node in Karachi’s urban survival network. For the average resident of Pakistan, Karachi, access to reliable transportation is synonymous with access to livelihood. When public transit is unreliable or absent, the automobile becomes essential. Consequently, the mechanic becomes indispensable. This paper explores the technical skills, economic pressures, and social dynamics that define this profession in a megacity context.
To understand the significance of the mechanic one must first contextualize the automotive landscape of Karachi. Unlike cities with robust public transit systems like Lahore or Islamabad, many residents in southern and western Karachi rely heavily on motorcycles (two-wheelers) and older model sedans or hatchbacks. These vehicles are often second-hand imports from Japan, Europe, or local scrap yards. They are prone to breakdowns and require constant maintenance.
The formal automotive service industry in Pakistan is concentrated in specific industrial zones like SITE (Standard Industrial Estate) and Korangi. However, the majority of repairs occur in roadside workshops known locally as "mechanic colonies." A holistic approach that recognizes the mechanic’s role as both a technical expert and an informal economic pillar is essential for sustainable urban development. By empowering rather than marginalizing these workers, Pakistan can build a more reliable and safer automotive ecosystem for its citizens.
