Through a mixed-methods approach involving field observations in repair workshops across the Çankaya and Keçiören districts of Turkey Ankara, this study analyzes the competency gaps between modern diagnostic requirements and current mechanic training infrastructures. The findings suggest that while physical mechanical skills remain paramount, there is an urgent need for specialized training in electronic control unit (ECU) diagnostics to maintain service quality standards in Turkey Ankara. This paper contributes to the academic discourse on urban mobility support systems and offers policy recommendations for vocational education institutions operating within Turkey Ankara.

The relationship between a city’s infrastructure and its vehicular maintenance ecosystem is symbiotic. In the context of Turkey Ankara, a megacity with over five million inhabitants, the demand for reliable mechanic services is both high and complex. Unlike rural areas where vehicle issues may be mechanical in nature due to older fleets, the urban environment of Turkey Ankara presents a heterogeneous mix of vehicles ranging from vintage models to state-of-the-art electric and hybrid vehicles.

Academic literature has extensively covered the economic impact of the automotive aftermarket in developing nations, yet fewer studies focus specifically on the technical competencies required by mechanic professionals in high-density urban centers like Turkey Ankara. The transition from purely mechanical repairs to mechatronic systems has created a skills gap that threatens service efficiency. This article argues that for Turkey Ankara to maintain its status as a logistical and automotive hub in Eastern Europe and Western Asia, its mechanic workforce must undergo significant technological upskilling.

The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the current state of mechanic practices in Turkey Ankara. Specifically, we aim to answer two questions: First, how prevalent is the reliance on outdated diagnostic tools among small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) in Turkey Ankara? Second, what are the structural barriers preventing comprehensive adoption of modern diagnostic protocols by local mechanics?

This study employs a quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods design. Quantitative data was collected through a survey administered to 150 accredited mechanic workshops located in three central districts of Turkey Ankara: Çankaya, Altındağ, and Keçiören. The survey focused on the types of diagnostic tools used, frequency of software updates for diagnostic scanners, and the educational background of head mechanics.

Qualitative data was gathered via semi-structured interviews with ten senior automotive engineers and three vocational training center directors in Turkey Ankara. These interviews provided deeper insights into the administrative and economic pressures faced by workshops trying to modernize their operations. All fieldwork was conducted between January 2023 and June 2023, ensuring that the data reflects current conditions in Turkey Ankara.

3.1 Equipment Disparities in Turkey Ankara

The survey results indicate a significant disparity in technological adoption across different types of workshops in Turkey Ankara. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to track the impact of these recommended policies on repair accuracy and customer satisfaction over time.
