Abstract
The landscape of eye care delivery in the United States has undergone significant transformation over the past two decades, driven by evolving scope-of-practice laws, demographic shifts, and technological advancements. This article examines the specific role of the optometrist within the complex healthcare ecosystem of Los Angeles, California. As a hub for diverse populations and advanced medical research, Los Angeles presents unique challenges and opportunities for primary eye care providers. This study analyzes recent data regarding patient outcomes in diabetic retinopathy screening, management of anterior segment diseases, and interprofessional collaboration with ophthalmologists in urban settings. Findings suggest that expanded practice rights for optometrists in Los Angeles contribute significantly to reducing wait times and improving access to care among underserved communities. However, systemic barriers related to insurance reimbursement parity and fragmented electronic health record systems remain obstacles.
