Abstract

This study examines the critical role of the plumber within the urban infrastructure landscape of Ethiopia Addis Ababa. As Ethiopia Addis Ababa undergoes rapid urbanization, the demand for reliable water supply and sanitation systems has reached unprecedented levels. This paper argues that formalizing and professionalizing the workforce, specifically focusing on certified plumbers in Ethiopia Addis Ababa, is essential for public health safety and sustainable infrastructure maintenance. Through a qualitative analysis of current regulatory challenges and technical gaps, this article highlights how skilled plumbers serve as the first line of defense against waterborne diseases and structural failures in one of Africa’s fastest-growing capitals.

The urbanization trajectory of Ethiopia Addis Ababa has been characterized by exponential growth over the last two decades. As a rapidly expanding metropolis, the city faces significant challenges regarding municipal services, particularly in water distribution and wastewater management. In this context, the plumber is not merely a tradesperson but a pivotal agent in maintaining public health and urban functionality. However, despite their importance, plumbers in Ethiopia Addis Ababa often operate within an informal or semi-regulated framework that lacks standardized oversight.
