Abstract
This study examines the evolving role of the professional plumber within the complex urban infrastructure of Istanbul, Turkey. As a transcontinental metropolis bridging Europe and Asia, Istanbul faces unique hydrological challenges exacerbated by rapid urbanization, seismic activity, and aging historic plumbing systems. This article argues that the traditional perception of a "plumber" as a mere repair technician is obsolete; rather, in the context of modern Turkey Istanbul infrastructure management, the plumber serves as a critical node in public health safety and environmental sustainability. Through an analysis of municipal water data from 2019–2023 and qualitative interviews with certified trade workers, we highlight the necessity for standardized regulatory frameworks for plumbing professionals to mitigate non-revenue water loss and prevent cross-contamination events. The findings suggest that investing in professional plumber training is not merely an economic imperative but a civic necessity for the resilience of Istanbul’s urban ecosystem.
Istanbul, Turkey’s cultural and economic heart, is home to approximately 15.9 million residents (Statistical Institute of Turkey [TUIK], 2023). The city’s infrastructure, particularly its water supply and sanitation systems, operates under immense pressure due to high population density and the geographical constraints of a peninsula divided by the Bosphorus Strait. Historically, Istanbul has relied on Roman and Ottoman hydraulic engineering feats; however, modern demands require a robust network of contemporary plumbing solutions.
The term "plumber" in academic literature often lacks specific contextual definition regarding urban management. Ultimately, empowering the plumbing sector is synonymous with empowering the city itself.
