Abstract:
The landscape of healthcare in Afghanistan has undergone profound transformations over the past three decades, characterized by both significant challenges and resilient adaptation. This article examines the current state of radiology services within Kabul, Afghanistan’s capital and largest urban center. As the epicenter for medical education and tertiary care delivery in the region, Kabul serves as a critical case study for understanding how diagnostic imaging—a cornerstone of modern medicine—operates under conditions of resource scarcity, infrastructure instability, and geopolitical volatility. This paper reviews the historical evolution of radiology in Afghanistan, analyzes the current technological landscape including Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) availability, discusses the critical shortage of trained personnel (Radiologists), and proposes strategic frameworks for sustainable development. The findings suggest that while Kabul possesses a functional but fragile radiological infrastructure, long-term sustainability requires international collaboration, localized training programs, and robust maintenance protocols to ensure equitable access to diagnostic services for the Afghan population.
