Abstract—Rapid urbanization in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has placed unprecedented pressure on existing infrastructure and natural resources. As Nigeria Abuja continues to expand, the challenge of managing wastewater, solid waste, and potable water supply has become critical for public health and environmental sustainability. This paper examines the pivotal role of the Environmental Engineer in designing resilient infrastructural solutions tailored to the specific climatic and demographic context of Nigeria Abuja. Through a review of current challenges, including groundwater contamination and inefficient waste management systems, this study highlights how professional engineering interventions can mitigate environmental degradation. The findings suggest that integrating modern treatment technologies with community-based management strategies is essential for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within the capital city. This paper serves as a Conference Paper presentation to facilitate dialogue among policymakers, engineers, and urban planners regarding sustainable development in Nigeria.

The primary concern revolves around water security and waste management systems that are struggling to keep pace with exponential population growth. In this context, the Environmental Engineer emerges not merely as a technical expert but as a critical architect of urban resilience.

The mandate of an Environmental Engineer extends beyond traditional civil works; it encompasses the protection of human health and the natural environment. In Nigeria Abuja, this role is particularly complex due to the dual challenges of a semi-arid climate, which strains water resources, and high population density in certain zones, which generates substantial waste loads.
