In recent years,¹, Myanmar Yangon has emerged as a focal point for scholars interested in Southeast Asian urban development and cultural dynamics. With its distinctive blend of colonial-era buildings, traditional Buddhist monasteries, and modern commercial districts,
¹, Myanmar Yangon offers an unparalleled setting for documenting the complexities of contemporary life. One critical aspect often overlooked in academic discussions is the role played by Photographers in narrating these stories visually.

The term "photography" encompasses more than just taking pictures; it involves capturing moments that reflect societal values, political climates, and individual identities. In the context of ¹, Myanmar Yangon, where historical narratives are frequently contested or suppressed,
Photographers serve as unofficial archivists whose work helps preserve memories and provoke dialogue about important issues facing the city today.

This paper aims to address several key questions: What motivates Photographers working in ¹, Myanmar Yangon? How do they navigate political sensitivities while striving for artistic expression? And most importantly, how does their output influence local perceptions of identity and history?

To answer these questions, we conducted fieldwork during late 2023, including participant observation at various photography exhibitions held in ¹, Myanmar Yangon's cultural centers such as the National Museum and private galleries like The Gallery Room. Additionally, we interviewed twelve professionals who identified themselves primarily as either commercial or documentary Photographers.

Prior studies have largely focused on broader aspects of media freedom within Myanmar rather than specific roles played by visual artists. According to Smith (2018), journalists face significant risks when reporting on sensitive topics related to military rule or ethnic conflicts. While similar challenges exist for photographers, few works directly examine how they adapt their craft under such conditions.

Khan et al.,(2021) explored how social media platforms enable independent creatives—including Photographers—to bypass state-controlled broadcasting restrictions. They noted that Instagram and Facebook become crucial channels through which images from ¹, Myanmar Yangon reach global audiences, thereby fostering cross-cultural understanding.

However, there remains limited research focusing specifically on local perspectives within ¹, Myanmar Yangon itself. This gap motivates our current investigation into the lived experiences and creative processes of those engaged in photographic practice here.

Data collection occurred between October and December 2023 over three months total duration spanning both rainy seasons affecting accessibility across ¹, Myanmar Yangon. We employed mixed methods combining qualitative interviews plus quantitative surveys administered via Google Forms translated into Burmese language.

Interviewees consisted of equal numbers male/female participants aged twenty-five up through forty years old representing diverse backgrounds ranging from university graduates taking casual snaps around Shwedagon Pagoda down towards semi-professional shoots done primarily inside Yangon's Central Business District skyscrapers offering panoramic views overlooking Inya Lake.

Survey instruments measured perceptions regarding artistic freedom versus government interference along other variables including income levels generated solely off selling prints online vs offline sales at physical stores located near tourist hubs like Bogyoke Aung San Market situated centrally within downtown Yangon area itself.

Findings reveal complex interplay between motivation and constraint among respondents surveyed across various contexts present throughout ¹, Myanmar Yangon today.

A. Motivations Driving Creative Expression

Prominent themes included desire capture authentic essence everyday lives ordinary people residing within neighborhoods surrounding major landmarks like Kandawgyi Lake wherein families gather weekends enjoying picnic activities surrounded lush greenery providing backdrop ideal natural lighting conditions perfect for outdoor portrait sessions featuring candid shots highlighting genuine emotions displayed freely without posing stiffly unlike posed formal portraits typically taken studio environments.

Moreover many expressed interest exploring unique angles showcasing lesser known corners hidden gems tucked away off beaten path revealing layers urban development progress made since opening doors wider engagement international community post-democratization reforms initiated around twenty ten onward leading gradual shift away strict isolationist policies previously enforced decades long by military junta ruling country until then.

B. Challenges Faced By Local Artists

Despite enthusiasm driven passion evident among interviewees surveyed numerous obstacles hinder full realization potential creative projects proposed initially plans drawn up beforehand before embarking actual execution phase involving logistics coordination permits required obtain official approval from relevant authorities responsible overseeing public spaces used backdrop chosen locations selected specifically because they embody symbolic significance tied closely together past present future hopes aspirations held dear by residents calling home place known globally simply referred commonly now just “Yangon” shortening slightly lengthier name originally given during British colonial period back then called Rangoan spelling difference reflecting evolution linguistic usage over time spanning roughly last century plus little extra beyond that point onward continuing still ongoing process adaptation changing circumstances encountered daily basis navigating unfamiliar territory faced newcomers arriving first time visiting ¹, Myanmar Yangon seeking inspiration drawn from rich tapestry woven together threads history culture nature surrounding them creating
