Abstract:
The metropolitan landscape of Nepal Kathmandu is undergoing rapid socio-economic transformation, characterized by urbanization, changing dietary habits, and intensified agricultural practices. This paper examines the critical and expanding role of the veterinarian in this unique context. Historically viewed primarily through the lens of livestock production for rural economies, veterinary science in Nepal Kathmandu is now pivotal to public health surveillance, zoonotic disease control, and sustainable urban farming. This study highlights how veterinarians act as essential intermediaries in the "One Health" framework, addressing challenges such as rabies control in dog populations emerging from unplanned urban expansion and managing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within small-scale dairy operations. The paper argues that strengthening veterinary infrastructure in Nepal Kathmandu is not merely an agricultural necessity but a fundamental component of public health security and environmental sustainability in South Asia’s most densely populated valley.

The capital city of Nepal, known globally as Nepal Kathmandu, represents a complex intersection of traditional agrarian values and modern metropolitan development. With a population exceeding one million within the core municipality and millions more in the broader valley, the demand for food security is immense. Concurrently, the density of human-animal interaction has increased dramatically. In this setting, the veterinarian stands as a frontline professional whose responsibilities have shifted significantly over the last two decades.

Traditionally, veterinary services in Nepal were designed to support pastoral and subsistence farming communities in remote hills and plains. However, as rural-to-urban migration accelerates due to economic pressures, small-scale animal husbandry has moved into the peri-urban fringes of Nepal Kathmandu. This demographic shift has created new epidemiological risks and management challenges that require specialized veterinary intervention. The modern veterinarian in Nepal Kathmandu must therefore possess a multidisciplinary skill set, integrating clinical medicine with public health policy, environmental science, and community education.

The concept of "One Health," which recognizes the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment, is particularly relevant to Nepal Kathmandu. As urban sprawl encroaches upon natural habitats and agricultural lands, the buffer zones that once protected human populations from wildlife-borne diseases have diminished. Veterinarians in this region are increasingly required to monitor zoonotic spillover events.

2.1 Rabies Control and Dog Population Management

Rabies remains a significant public health concern in Nepal Kathmandu. The city’s dog population, comprising both owned pets and stray animals, poses a continuous risk of transmission to humans. Veterinary authorities in Nepal Kathmandu are currently leading vaccination campaigns that extend beyond traditional livestock care into urban street dogs. The presence of a dedicated veterinary officer in local municipal health posts has been shown to reduce mortality rates in urban livestock and improve the economic resilience of farming families.
