Historically the commercial heart of Zimbabwe, Harare is currently undergoing a phase of transition characterized by both infrastructure renewal and persistent economic volatility. Central to this transformation is the demand for skilled technical labor, particularly trades that form the backbone of physical construction and maintenance.

In this context, the Welder emerges as a pivotal figure. Welding is not merely a method of joining metals; it is a fundamental enabler of industrial capability. Whether in the fabrication of structural steel for new commercial buildings in Harare’s central business district (CBD), the repair of agricultural machinery in surrounding peri-urban areas, or the construction of water infrastructure to address municipal challenges, the welder’s skill set is irreplaceable.

This conference paper aims to explore four key areas: first, the current state of welding technology and trade in Harare; second, the economic impact of skilled welders on local enterprises; third, the challenges faced by welders in Zimbabwe regarding equipment and power supply; and fourth, policy recommendations for enhancing vocational training.

Harare serves as the logistical and financial hub of the nation. The city’s industrial zones, such as Milton Park, Mount Pleasant, and Highfield, are dense with small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) that rely heavily on metal fabrication. Investing in the tools, training, and energy stability required for welders to thrive will yield substantial returns for the Harare economy.
