While light pollution presents challenges for optical astronomy, it does not hinder radio astronomy or data analysis from space-based telescopes. Furthermore, the cultural richness of Ghana Accra offered an unparalleled opportunity to engage with local communities who have deep historical roots in celestial navigation and timekeeping.

The internship was divided into three distinct phases: Data Analysis, Educational Outreach, and Community Engagement.
4.1 Data Analysis and Remote Observing
In Ghana Accra, direct optical observation of faint celestial objects is difficult due to the ambient light levels of the capital city. Therefore, my role as an Intern Astronomer focused heavily on data reduction and analysis. We utilized data streams from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and ground-based radio telescopes located in more rural parts of Ghana, but processed in our lab in Ghana Accra.
I was tasked with filtering noise from light curves to identify potential exoplanet transit signals. This process involved coding algorithms in Python to smooth data and detect periodic dips in brightness caused by orbiting planets. The experience provided me with hands-on experience in astrophysical data science, a critical skill set for modern astronomers.
4.2 Educational Outreach Programs
A significant portion of my time was dedicated to creating an Astronomy Curriculum for students in Ghana Accra. We recognized that many students had access to technology but lacked exposure to formal astronomy education. I developed a series of workshops titled "Stars Over the Savannah," which combined traditional stargazing techniques with modern digital tools.
During these sessions, we used planetarium software projected onto large screens in community centers across Ghana Accra. This allowed students to visualize the night sky as it would appear from their specific location, helping them understand celestial mechanics and coordinate systems.
