The internship was conducted at a leading diagnostic center in Islamabad. The facility is renowned for its adherence to international standards such as ISO 15189. Working in this context provided a unique opportunity to observe how global best practices are implemented within the local healthcare infrastructure of Pakistan. The role of a Laboratory Technician here extends beyond simple sample processing; it involves critical data interpretation, equipment maintenance, and strict adherence to bio-safety protocols.
2. Objectives of the Internship
The specific goals assigned to me during this internship as a Laboratory Technician included:

The primary focus was on electrolyte balance tests, liver function tests (LFTs), and kidney function tests (KFTs). I gained practical experience in preparing reagents and running daily quality control samples using commercially available control materials. This department required both automated and manual techniques. I assisted in performing Complete Blood Counts (CBC) using cell counters. The microbiology lab exposed me to the identification of pathogens. I learned how to collect sterile samples, such as urine and throat swabs, and inoculate them onto culture media. During these twelve weeks, my technical proficiency as a Laboratory Technician increased significantly. I became comfortable with:

- Safety Protocols:: Strict adherence to Universal Precautions, proper disposal of bio-hazardous waste, and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- LIS Integration:: Using Laboratory Information Systems to log samples and verify results digitally.
- Sample Handling:: Correct centrifugation speeds and storage conditions for various biological fluids.
5. Challenges and Observations
The environment in Islamabad presents unique challenges. The high volume of patients requires Laboratory Technicians to work efficiently without compromising accuracy. One significant challenge was the variability in sample quality due to patient preparation issues (e.g., non-fasting patients for lipid profiles). Additionally, managing power fluctuations, though less common now due to better infrastructure in Pakistan Islamabad, still required backup generator monitoring during my training period.
