The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive overview and detailed analysis of the clinical internship undertaken by the undersigned nursing student within the public health system of Brazil, specifically in its capital city, Brasília. This report serves as a formal record of practical experience, highlighting the acquisition of competencies required for professional practice as a qualified Nurse. The internship was conducted under the framework of the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS), which is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the world. This context provided a unique opportunity to observe and participate in healthcare delivery within one of Brazil's most modernized yet socially complex urban environments.
The transition from theoretical academic study to clinical practice is a critical phase in the education of any Nurse. The internship located in Brazil Brasília was chosen due to the city’s distinct characteristics as a planned capital with advanced infrastructure, juxtaposed against the stark social inequalities prevalent in surrounding satellite cities. This duality offers an unparalleled educational landscape for nursing students aiming to understand primary care, emergency services, and specialized hospital care.
Brazil Brasília is not merely a geographical location; it represents a hub of administrative and medical excellence in Central-West Brazil. The healthcare facilities here are equipped with high-level technology, yet they face the same human resource challenges as the rest of the country. For an intern, this environment demands adaptability, cultural sensitivity, and robust clinical reasoning skills.
The primary objective of this internship program was to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world patient care. Specific goals included:
- To develop proficiency in basic nursing procedures, such as vital signs monitoring, wound care, and medication administration.
- To understand the organizational structure of health units in Brazil Brasília, including Family Health Strategy (ESF) teams.
- To enhance communication skills with patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, a hallmark of the Brazilian demographic landscape.
- To practice interdisciplinary collaboration, working alongside doctors, physiotherapists, and social workers within a multidisciplinary team framework typical of modern nursing practices.
The internship was structured into three main clinical rotations over a period of six months. Each rotation focused on different aspects of nursing care, allowing for a holistic understanding of the profession.
3.1 Primary Care Units (Unidades Básicas de Saúde)
The first phase took place in primary care clinics across various neighborhoods in Brazil Brasília. Here, the intern acted as an extension of the Nurse team, assisting in health education campaigns, vaccination drives, and chronic disease management. This setting highlighted the importance of prevention and community health. The intern learned to triage patients effectively in a high-volume environment, prioritizing care based on urgency while maintaining empathy for individuals dealing with long-term conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
3.2 Emergency Care (UPA 24h)
The second rotation was conducted at an Urgent Care Unit (Unidade de Pronto Atendimento - UPA). This environment was fast-paced and demanding. As a Nurse intern, the focus shifted to acute care management. The intern observed and assisted in the stabilization of patients presenting with trauma, respiratory distress, and cardiac issues. The diversity of cases in Brazil Brasília's emergency units provided critical learning opportunities regarding stress management and rapid decision-making under pressure.
3.3 Specialized Hospital Ward
The final phase occurred in a specialized internal medicine ward within one of the capital's major hospitals.
