4.1 Case Management and Counseling

A significant portion of my time as a trainee was dedicated to case management. Under the supervision of senior staff, I assisted in opening and managing cases for individuals facing domestic violence, child neglect, and economic hardship. One notable experience involved working with a single-parent household in the Kawempe division. As an emerging Social Worker, I learned how to conduct home visits that were not only investigative but also supportive. To future interns and the hosting organization, I offer the following recommendations:

1. Mental Health Support:The organization should establish a robust peer-support system for staff and interns to manage secondary traumatic stress.
2. Resource Allocation:Policies in Uganda Kampala's NGOs must evolve to include more sustainable livelihood programs alongside direct relief, empowering clients to become self-sufficient.
3. Cultural Competency Training: Incoming interns should receive intensive training on the local cultural nuances of the area they are serving in Uganda Kampala before starting field work.
