For a UX/UI Designer intern, Mumbai offers a unique blend of traditional values and hyper-modern technological adoption. The user base in this region is incredibly diverse, ranging from tech-savvy millennials in South Bombay to first-time internet users in emerging digital markets across the city and its hinterlands. Understanding this dichotomy was central to my role during the internship.

The primary objective of this internship was to contribute to the product design lifecycle while mastering industry-standard tools and workflows. Key responsibilities included:

• User Research & Persona Development: Conducting field interviews in Mumbai to understand local user behaviors, paying special attention to language preferences (Marathi, Hindi, and English) and accessibility needs.
• Wireframing & Prototyping: Creating low-fidelity wireframes and high-fidelity interactive prototypes using Figma. The focus was on creating intuitive navigation flows for mobile-first applications.
• User Interface Design: Developing consistent design systems, including color palettes, typography, and iconography that resonated with the Indian demographic while maintaining global aesthetic standards.

The most significant project involved optimizing the onboarding experience for a digital wallet application targeting first-time users in Tier-2 cities within Maharashtra. Data indicated a high drop-off rate at the KYC (Know Your Customer) verification step. My task was to simplify this process.

Through user testing conducted in Mumbai, I discovered that users were intimidated by long forms and legal jargon. The internship in Mumbai provided an invaluable crash course in UX/UI design within a complex, high-growth market. The experience of working in India’s most populous city taught me adaptability, empathy, and the importance of designing for accessibility and performance constraints.
