As smartphone penetration increases and internet accessibility improves across the continent, there is an urgent need for intuitive, accessible, and culturally relevant digital products. This internship was designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and industry practice within the vibrant tech sector of South Africa Johannesburg.
The primary objective of this placement was to contribute meaningfully as a UX/UI Designer while absorbing knowledge about design systems tailored for emerging markets. The role required balancing aesthetic appeal with functional usability, ensuring that digital solutions meet the diverse needs of users in urban and semi-urban environments.
TechNova Solutions is a leading fintech and e-commerce aggregator headquartered in Sandton, Johannesburg. The company serves over two million active monthly users across Southern Africa. Their mission is to simplify financial inclusion through technology. This context provided a rich environment for UX/UI work, as the target demographic ranges from tech-savvy millennials to first-time smartphone users who require highly intuitive interfaces.
During the six-month tenure, I was assigned to two major projects: the redesign of the mobile banking app’s onboarding flow and the creation of a localized interface for a micro-lending platform. As a UX/UI Designer, my duties included:
3.1 User Research and Persona Development
User-centered design is not just about pixels; it is about people living in specific contexts. I conducted field interviews in townships around Soweto and corporate hubs in Sandton to understand data usage behaviors, trust issues with banking apps, and language preferences (including Zulu, Xhosa, and English). This research directly informed the creation of personas that reflected the reality of South Africa Johannesburg users.
3.2 Wireframing and Prototyping
I utilized Figma to create low-fidelity wireframes for the new onboarding process. The goal was to reduce friction for users who might be overwhelmed by complex financial jargon.
