Urbanization in Nigeria has accelerated dramatically over the past two decades, with Lagos State experiencing some of the highest population growth rates globally. This demographic surge has placed immense pressure on existing infrastructure, particularly regarding waste management and water resources. The primary objective of this laboratory investigation is to quantify pollution levels resulting from anthropogenic activities in high-density areas such as Makoko and Apapa.
An Environmental Engineer plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between scientific data and practical infrastructure solutions. In the context of Nigeria, Lagos, engineers must navigate challenges such as limited recycling facilities, informal waste disposal methods, and aging drainage systems. This report aims to provide a technical basis for policy adjustments and engineering interventions that address these specific local environmental stressors.
To ensure accurate representation of the environmental conditions in Nigeria, Lagos, samples were collected from three distinct zones: industrial (Apapa), residential (Ikeja), and water bodies (Eko Atlantic Lagoon).
Soil samples were taken at a depth of 0-15 cm to capture surface contamination. Water samples were collected from the surface layer during low tide conditions. All containers were sterilized and stored in coolers to prevent degradation prior to laboratory analysis.
Laboratory analysis was conducted using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) for heavy metal detection. Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) were measured to assess organic pollution levels in water bodies. Standard methods approved by the American Public Health Association were followed to ensure data reliability.
